Former NRC Commissioner and Leader in Advanced Nuclear Deployment Joins Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 31, 2020) – Nuclear Matters is pleased to welcome The Honorable Jeffrey S. Merrifield to the Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council. His unique perspective from advocating for next generation nuclear technology and smart industry regulation will add to Nuclear Matters depth of expertise on the most important issues in the nuclear industry.

“Nuclear power is at an inflection point right now as decisionmakers and the public begin to fully understand the importance of nuclear to achieving carbon reduction goals,” says Jeff Merrifield. “I am excited to join Nuclear Matters and add my voice to the chorus calling for the protection – and advancement – of nuclear energy in the U.S.”

Jeff Merrifield is currently a Partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, specializing in energy policy and strategy. He is a former presidential appointee to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) serving two terms from 1998 through 2007. During his time on the Commission, Jeff actively supported initiatives to improve the transparency, efficiency and effectiveness of the NRC’s regulatory programs. Prior to be appointed to the NRC, Jeff worked as an attorney in the U.S. Senate and as a senior non-legal executive at the largest power engineering and construction company in the United States.

Jeff currently serves as the Chairman of E4 Carolinas, the energy trade association of North and South Carolina. He also serves as the Chairman of the Nuclear Infrastructure Council Advanced Reactors Task Force, where he leads an effort to promote the deployment of innovative nuclear technology. Jeff received his bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and his JD from the Georgetown University. He is a member of the bar of both New Hampshire and DC.
