WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 25, 2019) – Nuclear Matters welcomes two new members to the Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council: Jesabel Rivera-Guerra, head of Community Impact & Engagement for the Nuclear Alternative Project (NAP), and Lee Causey, the newly elected President of North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN). These talented individuals will join the Nuclear Matters coalition to engage and inform policymakers and the public about the importance of nuclear power plants to provide reliable, scalable and carbon-free energy to millions of households and businesses across the country.
“Throughout my career, I’ve engaged communities around issues that are critical to people’s health, safety and futures,” said Jesabel Rivera-Guerra. “I’m determined to use my platform on this panel of experts to continue to educate the masses on how nuclear technology can empower a responsible economy and reliable solutions.”

Our great industry is filled with young nuclear professionals that want to stand up for nuclear energy’s place in our future,” said Lee Causey. “I’ve seen how effective grassroots advocacy can be to enact change, starting with simple conversations. The nuclear industry needs a voice, and I’m looking forward to helping tell our nuclear story.”
Jesabel Rivera-Guerra is a community and public health strategist, with a focus on community well-being and social justice. As part of the Nuclear Alternative Project, Rivera-Guerra engages communities in Puerto Rico and elsewhere to advocate for the inclusion of advanced nuclear reactors, specifically small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors, as a tool for community development on island nations. Currently, she is helping to conduct a community engagement campaign for a feasibility study in Puerto Rico. Previously, Rivera-Guerra worked as the Director of Community Health Strategies at the American Heart Association, where she implemented programs to reduce cardiovascular disease in the Greater Pittsburgh area. She also currently serves as the founder and CEO of Community Impact & Engagement Solutions, spearheading strategic planning for community service projects.
Lee Causey has worked in the nuclear industry since 2008 as an engineer at Duke Energy’s Shearon Harris and McGuire nuclear power plants. He’s been a member of NAYGN since 2010, serving as Duke Energy’s site programs chair, fleet programs chair and chapter lead. As President of NAYGN, Causey leads the grassroots effort to educate the public about nuclear energy and develop young professionals in the fields of nuclear science and technology.
